Class 4 vs Class 7 MOT: What Does Your Vehicle Need?

By The Factory Technical Team

Class 4 covers cars and goods vehicles up to 3,000kg design gross weight. Class 7 covers goods vehicles over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg.

The short answer

Most cars need a Class 4 MOT. Larger vans with a design gross weight over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg need a Class 7 MOT.

How to check your vehicle

Look at the manufacturer’s plate — often in a door shut or under the bonnet — for the design gross weight. It may also be shown in your documents.

Official guidance

GOV.UK publishes the official MOT class definitions and rules. If you’re unsure, send us your registration and a photo of the plate.

Booking

The Factory tests both Class 4 and Class 7 on site. Choose the class on our MOT form and it opens WhatsApp with the message ready.
