Clutch Replacement in Sunbury-on-Thames

A clutch wears gradually, so symptoms creep up — a rising biting point, slipping under load or judder pulling away. Replacing it before it fails completely avoids being stranded.

We replace clutches on manual vehicles of all makes, and always inspect the flywheel while the gearbox is out.

Common signs

Symptoms worth checking

  • Engine revs rise without matching acceleration
  • Very high or low biting point
  • Judder when pulling away
  • Difficulty selecting gears
  • Burning smell after hill starts

What a clutch job involves

The gearbox is removed to access the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing. Hydraulic components such as the slave cylinder are often replaced at the same time.

Because access is labour-intensive, we check the flywheel and rear main seal while it’s apart.

What we check

  • Slip test and road test
  • Hydraulic system and fluid
  • Flywheel condition
  • Rear main seal leaks
  • Gearbox mounts

What we can do

  • Clutch kit replacement
  • Concentric slave cylinder replacement
  • Flywheel replacement where needed
  • Hydraulic bleeding

FAQs

Clutch Replacement: your questions answered

How do I know if my clutch is slipping?

Revs climb but the car doesn’t accelerate accordingly, especially in higher gears or uphill.

Why is my clutch biting point very high or low?

A high biting point often indicates wear; a low or inconsistent one can suggest a hydraulic issue.

What causes clutch judder?

Contamination, uneven wear, a failing flywheel or engine/gearbox mounts.

Why is it difficult to select gears?

The clutch may not be fully disengaging — hydraulic faults or worn components — or there may be a gearbox issue.

Do you inspect the flywheel when replacing a clutch?

Yes, always.
