Why Are My Brakes Squeaking?

By The Factory Technical Team

Squeaks are often caused by pad wear indicators, glazing or dust. Light noise after rain can be normal; persistent squealing, grinding or vibration should be inspected.

The short answer

Many squeaks come from pad wear indicators touching the disc, glazed pads, or vibration at contact points. Some light noise in damp conditions is normal as surface rust is cleaned off.

Common causes

Worn pads reaching their indicators; glazing from overheating; lack of lubrication on pad contact points; dust and debris; and certain pad materials that are naturally noisier.

When it’s more serious

Grinding suggests metal-on-metal contact. Vibration, pulling or a changing pedal feel indicate other faults. If the car feels unsafe, don’t keep driving it.

What an inspection involves

With the wheels off, pads and discs are measured, calipers checked for free movement, and hoses and fluid inspected.
